playin pissed is not a smart idea but a bit buzzed...thats ok...
how else are you gonna get through a mind numbing evening of top 40 tunes.
how many of you wanna play mustang sally or brown eyed girl again...lol
the best is when you play to a click(trax). you just find this zone...strange.
the bottom line is..if your buzzed while yer playin. stay in control..
ok... see ya...

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Ha ha, yeah, now that you put it THAT way!...

& yes, it's easier & more of a comfort zone [OK; a "crutch" maybe ] to play just slightly so "relaxed" [beer or 2] when you have a click with which to reference your time...[Lord knows i can't say i've never done it... /;-p]

"stay in control" - that pretty much sums it up.

Just enough to be relaxed & uninhibited, but not enough to make one overplaying & sloppy.
For some folks, this is a fine line ...

It's all about playing sober and into the moment naturally...
For the music I play, there's no way I could perform while having my mind altered by something. I wouldn't want to. Drumming is the most natural high I've ever experienced. Now writing music on the other hand...
How did Bonham do it?

...or the rest of those who did/do it [JP, etc].

Truthfully i agree dawg.

Altho i've nothing against anyone who does so in moderation, I've for many years long since quit having anything at any time surrounding my playing time [both b4 or aft]. For me, it just isn't necessary. Your post explains it perfectly for me.

i live for the pocket..took me a while but now i just understand...it even works if you have a bit of a buzz..lol
but....when you find that zone and your sober...its one of the most powerfull highs for any of us.
its kida tough sometimes when its all around you...lol
you gotta at least take advantage of your rider somehow...lol

Drugs can be very useful for this purpose. I don't endorse performing in front of an audience while stoned/high/drunk -- that stuff has no place in the "workplace", in my view (for me, at least). The bottom line -- if it's working for you, then go ahead!

There's a famous musician quote that goes:

"No junk, no soul."

I don't buy into that, but it's kinda funny and sad at the same time.

P.S. I agree about drumming being a natural high

The consensus is on a scale ranging from none to moderation in all things, and no further. So many wise men at HOD.

Most bands I've been in drank beer during rehearsals and onstage. The thought process was 'we rehearse drinking and we perform drinking.' I think a couple of beers should be any performer's maximum, a little more if you can handle it. By more I don't mean enough to impede motor skills, but after your first mistake you're on the water diet. Nowadays I allow myself a beer during the break before the last set, it's usually a short one.

Like a car whipping in and out of traffic, everybody automatically dislikes the driver (even if he is rushing his pregnant wife to the hospital.) The same applies to a drunk, everbody feels superior to anyone who's sloppy. This is herd mentality and your audience is that herd, hopefully one without hoof-and-mouth. I want to appear to be in charge and in control of things, everywhere, not just the stage but especially there.

No offense Johnathan, your posts always seem to be intelligent [by my standards; which may or may not be a good thing! ], & not that I was always a "prude" or "square" in any sense of the word, but that is a very precarious perch with which i must come forward & disagree with by documenting here, since so many guests tend to read here, whom may or may not be younger & more impressionable...& my having lived long enough to witness more than enough serious & costly life mistakes based on that kind of erred understanding / rationalizing / justification / denial]...I have to go w Warunki on this one.

Am i condemning someone for having a few during the coarse of the gig? By my previous posts, absolutely not. But buying into that sort of thinking, that "drugs/narcotics somehow enlighten the mind" or give a "new, fresh" perspective, has destroyed many a muso [more than not], let alone millions of others over history...

But again, everyone is allowed to make their own choices as to what's right for themselves [whether found later in hindsight to be mistaken or not], & as to which road to follow. I firmly espouse that. But every serious life choice [& I consider that one of them] has ramifications. I'm not trying to come off preachy [these things tend to be perceived that way regardless of the logic], but that is a fact I've lived to see, many more times than not.

OK, I'll get off my podium now. /;-)
